Dr. Matthew D. Lucas serves as a Professor in the Department of Health, Recreation, and Kinesiology.
Dr. Lucas holds an Ed.D. in Adapted Physical Education from the University of Virginia. He has worked for over 28 years in the field including at the elementary school level and at Longwood University. He has created and runs three free sports/recreation programs for children with disabilities in the Farmville, VA area. The programs were started in 2009 and currently meet 20-25 times a year. Dr. Lucas also serves on the editorial boards of seven journals including the international adapted physical education journal, Palaestra. The journals also include four international special education journals and two state health, physical education, and recreation journals.
Dr. Lucas has published/co-published about 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts in international, national, and state journals. These journals include adapted physical education, special education, and physical education/recreation journals. He has also conducted over 40 presentations at the international, national, state, and local levels. In addition, he published an e-course on methods of developing individualized education programs for students in physical education as well as an anthology in a children's book with a goal for readers to understand the value of all people, specifically individuals with disabilities.
